Frequently Asked Questions About Patios

 

I can't decide between brick pavers and stamped concrete for our new patio.  Can you compare these two products?

    • We  install both brick paver and stamped concrete paver patios.  Here are some points to consider when making your choice:

        • Stamped Concrete

          • Initially less expensive than brick pavers
          • Has a fairly large variety of colors and textures
          • Is faster to install
          • Can be driven on
          • Carries no warranty against cracking
            [Stamped concrete is at risk for cracking
            in this climate: the freeze and thaw cycles
            of Michigan winters can cause heaving and
            cracking of the concrete]
          • Cannot be repaired, once cracked.
            [The concrete dyes cannot be matched
            from a previous install.  Each dye lot is
            unique]
        • Brick Pavers
          • Offers a more extensive pallet of colors and textures
          • Provides creative options for decorative inlays and
            contrasting borders  [Stamped concrete borders are
            possible, but very costly because they require a
            second pour.]
          • Carry a lifetime warranty against cracking
          • Can be lifted out and easily replaced with matching
            pavers if they become damaged or stained
          • Can be lifted out and then reset:
              • for access to underground pipes
                in need of repair
              • to repair settling due to chipmunks, etc.
          • Never need sealing [if you choose one of the new
            generation of pavers that are specially coated
            at the factory]

I have weeds in between the joints of my paver patio.  What can I do?

        • There are basically two options for controlling weeds that can appear in your patio:

          • Spray the affected areas with Roundup [or ask us to spray with our more complete weed control product]
          • For a longer-term solution, have our Techniseal Certified staff come out and
            • Remove all weeds, debris and existing sand from your pavers
            • Clean your pavers with special  Techniseal cleaners
            • Re-sand your patio or walkway with new polymeric sand
            • Seal you pavers with a choice of either natural or "wet look" finish

What is polymeric sand?

        • Polymeric sand is the new generation of material used to fill the joints between brick pavers.  It consists of sand particles and polymers that bond them together so that:

            • The sand particles don't wash out
            • Weeds are far less likely to germinate in the joints
            • Insects are deterred from "making themselves at home."
        • We use polymeric sand on all of our new paver installations.  However,  we can certainly replace the traditional washed sand on an existing patio or walk with polymeric sand when we clean and seal your pavers.
